When curly hair is at its healthiest, it’s full of bounce, body, and definition. But when curly hair gets damaged from external stressors – such as bleaching, colouring, or excessive heat styling – it can compromise the look and feel of your locks.

Enter: the Redken Acidic Bonding Curls collection – a three-step haircare regimen that works to strengthen damaged, overprocessed curls and coils.

Since curly hair has a unique set of washing and styling needs, we have curated this expert haircare guide to help you bring vitality back to your mane using the Redken ABC range alongside some of our hero styling products.

What happens to curly hair when it’s damaged?

Curly and coily hair types are naturally more porous, meaning they struggle to retain moisture. This can present several challenges. When curly hair gets damaged, for example, it causes the cuticles along the hair shade to ‘lift’. As a result, moisture retention becomes even more difficult – exacerbating common curly hair woes. Seasonal changes can also make curly hair drier, particularly in winter when humidity is lower. This is why year-round hydration is essential for curly hair.

Some of the effects of damage to curly hair include:

  • A change in curl pattern
  • A loss of definition and body
  • Dryness and dullness
  • Extra frizz
  • More split ends and breakage

What is the Redken Acidic Bonding Curls Collection?

The Acidic Bonding Curls Collection is Redken’s new, innovative hair care range specifically designed for damaged and processed curly hair.

Our first silicone-free bonding collection, the Redken ABC range is formulated with a powerful blend of citric acid and glycine to revive the pattern of curls and coils. This range also features natural oils such as avocado and coconut oil that lightly coat the hair for long-lasting hydration and elasticity.

The collection comprises three formulas – a shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in treatment – to strengthen and nourish damaged curls at each step of your hair routine.

How to use the Redken ABC range: a step-by-step guide

Empower your curl pattern and revive moisture, definition, and shine with the Acidic Bonding Curls range. Hydration is at the heart of this collection; and, for the best results, we recommend following the three-step routine to cleanse, condition and treat.

Ahead, we’ll guide you through each step of this process so you can nourish damaged, processed curls – from the inside out!

1. Cleanse

Many traditional shampoos are formulated with sulfates and silicones to cleanse the hair. Yet, though effective, this can be particularly drying for curly, processed hair. Redken’s Acidic Bonding Curls Silicone-Free Shampoo is free of these cleansing agents – allowing it to focus on hydrating and strengthening the hair while removing buildup.

How to use:

Apply the Redken ABC shampoo onto wet hair, massage into a lather, and rinse. Depending on your curl pattern, you may only need to wash your hair once a week, or even once every two weeks.

2. Condition

The conditioning stage is essential for curly hair to nourish and strengthen strands, as well as improve hair elasticity. Redken’s Acidic Bonding Curls Silicone-Free Conditioner provides intense conditioning for up to 96 hours*, helping to detangle strands and reduce frizz.

How to use:

After shampooing, apply the conditioner to damp hair. Move through the mid-lengths and ends, gently detangling as you work your fingers through. Leave on for several minutes, then rinse.

*Consumer test, 60 subjects after application of the Acidic Bonding Curls shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in 96 hours after application.

3. Leave-in and protect

Hair treatments deliver additional nourishment to the hair while preparing strands for styling. Follow the Redken ABC shampoo and conditioner with the Acidic Bonding Curls Silicone-Free Leave-in Treatment for enhanced shine, definition, heat protection, and frizz control.

How to use:

Start with clean, damp hair, and distribute the Redken ABC treatment from your mid-lengths to ends. Leave in, and style hair as desired.

Curly hair styling routine

While you can care for your curly, damaged hair using the Redken Acidic Bonding Curls collection, you can also define and enhance curls with our new Curl Stylers  collection.

This silicone-free hydrating styling range includes Sculpting Curl Gel, Hydrating Curl Cream, and Refreshing Curl Mist. These stylers are formulated with squalene and jojoba oil that work to keep hair hydrated and frizz-free for up to 72 hours*.

To help you get the most out these curl products, follow our four-step styling routine below.

  1. Damp hair: Begin with damp, freshly washed hair that’s been treated with Redken Acidic Bonding Curls system.
  2. Gel: Apply Redken’s Sculpting Curl Gel to damp hair, distributing evenly for a strong (yet lightweight) hold, structure, and enhanced definition.
  3. Cream: Layer Redken’s Hydrating Curl Cream over the gel, focusing on the mid-lengths to ends. This will add moisture and further define your curls, while providing frizz and heat protection (up to 230°C).
  4. Mist: Reach for Redken’s Refreshing Curl Mist, a lightweight, leave-in spray that can be used before air-drying or diffusing to add volume and definition to curls. Spritz it onto dry hair to reactivate flat, frizzy or deflated curls in between washes.
